From there, we talked about music, dinosaurs, the Grammys he wanted and I wanted. It was just creative people talking about what drives them and what pops up in the head. From the first conversation, I had a sense that he was on to something. I was looking for just a reprieve. At 20 or 21, I had, I think, a couple hundred thousand dollars [from producing and songwriting], a nice car, a Beverly Hills apartment—and I was miserable… And here was this group of like-minded individuals whose irreverence made me revere.
The do-it-yourself mentality of OF really rubbed off on me. Under their influence and with their support, he began making the transformation from Lonny Breaux the Songwriter, to Frank Ocean the Artist.
During his time in Los Angeles, Frank Ocean provided his songwriting talents to a variety of high-profile artists. Before Nostalgia, Ultra, Ocean often relied on catchy, simple rhymes and formulaic, familiar song structures.
The goal was to make the music as commercially friendly as possible. Approximately one year after meeting Tyler, the Creator and the rest of Odd Future, Frank made the decision to leave his birth name in the past. He would redefine it. Tricky approached Frank with promises of a solo career, and ended up signing the young songwriter to Def Jam as a solo artist at the end of But Def Jam never gave him a recording budget and seemed disinterested in his future at best.
With the help of his fellow Odd Future members , the mixtape hit the digital airwaves like a freight train. Nostalgia, Ultra marked the end of the Lonny Breaux era, but it also represented a grand new beginning for Frank Ocean — just as Hurricane Katrina had done six years earlier.
Some of my favorite artists are Frank Ocean, Anderson. I love working with artists and creatives that I believe in to develop their brand and work toward their goals. The collection was created as a companion to The Lonny Breaux Collection. As such, this tape may contain some light overlap with that one depending on the version you downloaded. As more reference tracks have leaked over the years, varying versions have appeared with enough differences to allow some duplication here.
The release has 42 tracks that include reference tracks, snippets, remixes, and all of the tracks Frank released on his Tumblr account. Each track has clean metadata including lyrics. Alternate album art is included in the folder. Chances are, if you're a stan like us you may already have many of these tracks. If so, you may want to check this release for better quality bitrates of the songs you have.
There have been zero edits made to the encoding of these songs so that you can be sure you have the best versions available on the Internet. This is intentional. We just recently upgraded a few ourselves after listening to crappy youtube rips for years.
If you can prove us wrong, we'd be happy to upgrade the tape with your improvements. Reach out to us here.
