AD also styled A. AD is contrasted with BC also styled B. It depends on who you ask. Some people think the 22nd century will start January 1, and end December 31, , with the 23rd century beginning on January 1, But there is a long history of people insisting that this is flat-out wrong for mathematical reasons: a century is by definition years in length, and the first century started on January 1, 1, which means that when December 31, 99 rolled around only 99 years had passed; therefore, the first century of the current millennium didn't actually end until December 31, , and the second century didn't begin until January 1, This topic has proven to be vexatious especially at the turns of centuries, starting at the end of the 17th one, according to a Library of Congress article by Ruth S.
Freitag called "Battle of the Centuries. We have uniformly rejected all letters, and declined all discussion upon the question of when the present century ends? The present century will not terminate till January 1, , unless it can be made out that 99 are Eighteen centuries are years, then how can 18 centuries be completed till the year has expired? What is the meaning of a century, but a clear distinct series of years?
How can be completed by 99? The world has voted with its cheque book in the debate on precisely when the millennium ends. While pedants continue to pit December 31, , against the end of the year , everyone who is anyone, it seems, has opted for the earlier date as the time to organise what they hope will be the mother of all parties. Freitag notes that the article continues on "to report that a hotel, the construction of which had not yet begun, was already fully booked for that date, and points out that flying Concorde westward would enable revelers to ring in the New Year in several widely separated cities.
Global communications technology has changed that. For most of history, economic growth was slow or nonexistent. All of that makes this an unusual time — and perhaps a time when people determined to change the world are unusually empowered to do so. Human history could potentially stretch for billions of years, and has already stretched for tens or hundreds of thousands depending on when you start counting civilizations as relevantly part of human history.
According to [the hypothesis], that time is… right now. Another way to think about it: the above few paragraphs make the case that this is a uniquely important era. But one could easily imagine an article from Vox in making the case that the century ahead was a uniquely important era — after all, by the end of it, America would be independent, the international slave trade ending, the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era ahead to catastrophically shake Europe.
A Vox article at the time of the collapse of the Roman Empire would have a pretty good claim to be talking about the most important era in human history. And what about the eras when major world religions were founded? Perhaps Vox in would be making the case, via whatever channels of communication are popular in , that the decision of how to colonize the Andromeda Galaxy is the most important moment in human history.
Sure, we have some pretty good arguments for the importance of our era. Are the arguments for the 21st century really that much stronger than the arguments for the 1st century, or for centuries yet to come? Under this view, sure, we have some serious challenges ahead of us. The philosophers who debate this disagree on fairly little. Almost all of them want vastly more resources to be devoted to combatting existential risks, or things that might wipe us out in the next few centuries. If this is the critical moment, the balance of our efforts should probably be spent less on long-term priorities questions and more on action — like political efforts to reverse course on dangerous human activities, and research on how to mitigate the immediate dangers of present threats.
Some people who study the far future think that we mostly need targeted interventions to benefit the far future. A targeted intervention is something like stopping an asteroid from hitting Earth.
Others favor mostly very broad ways of helping the far future, like making the population more altruistic or educated or compassionate, trusting that whatever problems arise for them, these things are likely to help. The question of whether this century is unique — or at least highly unusual — might affect whether targeted or broad interventions seem better.
In short, how we think about the threats of this century might significantly affect how we go about addressing the threats of this century. Sign up for the Future Perfect newsletter. Our mission has never been more vital than it is in this moment: to empower through understanding. In order to replace the expressions before Jesus Christ and after Jesus Christ , it is more and more common to use before our era , or before common era AEC for negative years and likewise common era EC for recent positive years.
