In most cases, items were simply stacked on the shelves without being removed from the boxes they were shipped in. Costco and Sam's Club shoppers won't bat an eye, but if you're used to enticing displays, you won't find them here.
Here are some things I never thought I'd find at Aldi: A vintage-inspired turntable. A set of luggage. A portable hammock. A pool float shaped like a poop emoji. Yes, really. Labeled "Aldi Finds," these kinds of non-food items are limited-time buys that are often seasonal. They're certainly worth a browse, even if only for the entertainment value. Its website lists nearly two dozen exclusive labels, including Clancy's snack foods, L'Oven Fresh bread, Little Journey baby products, and much more.
I spotted a few familiar brand names including Coke, Tyson, Gatorade, Crest, and Tide, but they were the exception, not the rule. Aldi is king of copycat packaging. Some of the product names were also pretty cheeky. For instance, you won't find Ritz crackers, but you will find Savoritz crackers — packaged in bright red, of course.
If you want to get your drink on, Aldi has you covered though local laws may affect availability in some locations. There's no question that food is the star of the show at Aldi. Sure, you can get things such as shampoo and paper towels there, but the selection seemed particularly thin. Throw in Target's better selection, frequent sales, and REDcard discounts, and it makes more sense for me to keep stocking up on these things there.
I had to watch the Aldi cashiers in awe for a moment, because I'd never seen grocery-store checkouts move this fast. A modern design and even using open ceilings will bring natural lighting into the store, making it environmentally friendly, too.
They'll even use recycled materials, energy-saving refrigeration, and LED lighting. Aldi will often schedule only two or three staff at a time. That's nothing compared to the number of employees you'll see at other markets.
With the way Aldi is designed, not as many workers are needed to stock the shelves or keep things in order. This also allows the store to pay those few employees a decent paycheck. Aldi doesn't bother buying as many plastic bags as other stores, thanks to their bag policy. If you end up using an Aldi plastic bag, you'll have to pay for it. This is to encourage customers to bring their own bags — keeping the store a green environment and putting money back into customer pockets.
Have you ever seen a Walmart or Target ad on TV? Probably not as many. Although Aldi does have a small television campaign, advertisements on television aren't seen as frequently as other popular name brands. This means Aldi has extra money to save for what they do best — bring you cheap prices. No need to have someone working the shopping carts all the time with a system like Aldi's!
In order to use a cart, you must put a coin in the cart to unlock it. While this might not seem like a boon, it benefits the customer in two ways. Firstly, it contributes to the overall smaller stores and therefore lower prices and it ensures the freshest product is always being moved out onto the sales floor. Inherent with less storage and shelf space is fewer items. Aldi makes excellent use of the space they do have, though.
The stores may get them from time to time as ALDI Finds special weekly items sold in limited quantities , but you have no guarantee they will be there. Not constantly stocking superstore-esque products certainly allows Aldi to function with their smaller spaces. First, it helps ensure customers return their own carts to the corrals at the front of the store. Faster check-out equals more potential people served, and this is especially important considering the next item on this list.
Walking into a Walmart at 1 a. Stores run on much more limited hours than many of their grocery store peers. This is why maximizing customers served during the hours they are open is so important! But these limited hours mean lower utilities, less wear-and-tear on stores and fewer employees needed and needing to be paid. Why are there so few employees in Aldi stores? Aldi pays well above minimum wage in the United States, even to start, and their benefits package is considered generous.
It does not have the wide range of brands that Coles and Woolworths offers. It is for that reason that I recommend shopping at Aldi and one other major supermarket. Get your basics foodstuffs, then get the brands you are attached to or the niche items you need at one of the other majors. Pick the eyes out of the specials at both. Last Sunday, I spent two hours doing the family grocery shop at Aldi and Coles — my two local supermarkets — and undertook two experiments.
I looked at the range of Aldi items with lower prices since the pandemic and picked 25 that my family buys from time to time. Then I checked what the cheapest equivalent item in Coles would cost usually the Coles home brand.
