He quickly began to consider Falman, Breda, and Havoc as close friends. Mustang, however, was one whom he had an uncertain relationship with.
Apart from the stories of Ishval, Fuery had never met Mustang before the unit was formed. This appeared to be Mustang's main opinion of the young man, something Fuery accepted with some degree of unease. Working under Mustang was something Fuery came to love. His fear of being around the man grew to admiration and open endearment. He trusts the Colonel with his life, and does the best he can to help him. Life for Fuery changed under the Colonel's command.
For one, Fuery met the Elric brothers Even though he was not directly affected by them, Fuery was no exception to this rule. Still, for some time, his life remained relatively normal. The country may have been going into turmoil, but Fuery found that he was still able to maintain his usual routine. His continued to adjust and set up communications lines, and was still able to help the Colonel any way he could. Scar's crusade against the National Alchemists of the Military did not affect him directly, though he did worry about the Colonel and his other alchemist friends.
It was not until the death of Maes Hughes that Fuery would be pulled into the turmoil of Amstris, once more changing his life. The night the homunculus Envy killed Hughes would forever change the inner workings and goals of the team. Mustang's drive turned to avenging Hughes, and the team's, to uncovering the man's murderer.
Nearly a month passed before they got their first lead from Barry the Chopper. Through the captivity of Barry, the team began to unravel the mystery of the true killer.
They used the knowledge that she had used one bullet to protect the Elric's in the Lab Five incident to implicate her. Ross was on her way to death row, when Barry and Mustang intervened. Barry broke the woman out of jail, and with the combined efforts of the two men, she escaped to the East.
Barry's extravagant show that evening would bring public attention to certain homunculi. With this bringing hope to the team, Mustang's unit set up a trap in hopes of catching Hughes' murderer. Havoc, Hawkeye, and Fuery staked out the apartment Falman held Barry captive in. Fuery stayed in his second apartment, where he kept open communication lines set up between the other three. They did not have to wait long, before the homunculi send out Barry's human body to search for its mission soul.
The tussle between Barry and Barry lasted several minutes while Hawkeye and Mustang kept a casual, coded conversation going. Hearing this, Fuery wasted no time in leaving his post to go to Hawkeye's lookout. Fuery and Black Hayate, the puppy who was accompanying him, arrived on the scene to see Gluttony clutching Hawkeye by the throat.
Black Hayate was the first to respond, attacking the homunculus. Hawkeye was released, and amidst the commotion, Fuery threw the Lieutenant a gun. They fired until they ran out of ammo, at which time the Colonel made his appearance and set fire to the creature. This was the first time Mustang's team went face-to-face with a homunculus, but it wouldn't be the last.
Soon after, they would meet a second homunculus: Lust. Mustang managed to destroy her, but only after she paralyzed Jean Havoc. During this time the team began learning the truth behind the military: Fuhrer King Bradley was a homunculus. Soon after, an order was brought down upon the team: they would no longer serve under Mustang, and would be separated.
The disassembly of the team was done as both a warning and threat to Mustang. A week after, Fuery found himself dodging shellfire on the Southern border. The South was in the midst of a war against Amestris' neighboring country, and Fuery was given the task of laying down the communication lines around the area. But he managed to steel his will and stay alive until his eventual desertion.
That day was also the one Mustang staged a coup against the Military, but he would not do it alone. Shortly before the Promised Day would arrive Mustang entered an underground tunnel to find his old team waiting for him with the exception of Vato Falman, who was still traveling from the North with another group of soldiers. Here, he gave his subordinates one order: do not die. Fuery took the order to heart. After months of War, Fuery's heart had hardened.
Where he had once been cautious, almost afraid, of shooting a gun, he could now shoot with such an intense look on his face and little panic. It's evident the Southern War had changed the formerly fiercely optimistic young man.
