When is world spirometry day 2017

World Asthma Day was on May 2nd, organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma GINA , and saw health charities and medical practices around the world carry out fundraising initiatives and community workshops aimed at improving asthma awareness and care. As the month of May is a peak season for asthma and allergy sufferers it is a perfect time to educate patients, family, friends, co-workers and others about the disease. This is designed to provide an agreed blueprint for activities to transform asthma outcomes in Europe.

Spirometry is usually the first test a GP or asthma nurse will do to help work out how likely it is that a patient has asthma. A Spirometer measures how much air a patient can breathe out.

They can also see whether the airways have responded to the bronchodilator medicine. This test can also help the healthcare team see if symptoms might be caused by another lung condition, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD.

The photos were exhibited to policymakers in Brussels, featured in a public advertising campaign on the Brussels metro and were shared on social media.

Vytenis Andriukaitis, the EU Commissioner for Health, was one of the many people who came along and supported the event. Read more about the campaign. As part of the campaign, EFA has launched a number of videos which feature people with COPD being active as a means to inspire and motivate other people with the condition to give exercise a go. Alongside people with COPD doing pulmonary rehabilitation, martial arts and resistance training at the gym, Isabel talks about her three policy hopes for COPD in Europe: better diagnosis, with spirometry tests available to people at risk; support for quitting smoking — especially programmes tailored to people who work during the week; and access to pulmonary rehabilitation, which is proven to help people with COPD to manage their condition.

As well as working together on research that aims to better understand COPD and improve the lives of people living with the condition, the project will see the PhD students carry out public engagement activities.
